Renovating a bathroom for the elderly

One day, the bathroom that was familiar and ever used daily become a toilet that cannot respond to usage as usual. With the bathroom users getting old than their ears and eyes, their joints and organs movement would not active as strong as ever.

Sometimes they have to use a walking stick or take a wheelchair. This time the bathroom innovation would be needed. The main concepts would be suitable for the conditions to serve the convenience and safety of the elderly. 

Do pay attention especially to the different points from the general bathroom as follows;

• The Knob devices such as faucets, doors, etc. should be changed to a lever style. Or motion sensor type to reduce the chance of sore wrists and knuckles.
• Support railing is an indispensable thing. There must be both sides of the washbasin and sanitary wares along the wall to the shower area. With the installing height from the floor around 60-75 cm.
• The door should be replaced with a lightweight sliding door without bolts and no sliding rails on the floor. By using the hanging rail instead.
• There should be a glass window on the door which could be seen in the event of an accident. 
• The width of the doorway should not less than 90 cm. and the internal turning distance not less than 150 cm. in case of taking a wheelchair.
• The bathroom floor should be smooth, not slippery, not let anything to stumble, and using materials with surface friction not lower than R10. 
• The colors should be different clearly between the walls and various equipment in the bathroom.
• Toilets must have the height of the seat 43-53 cm. above the floor (normal 38-40 cm.) in order to reduce stiffness when standing up and avoiding to hurt the ankles.
• To change a shower to be adjustable up and down with a shower seat preparation.
• Lighting must be sufficient. To use white lights in order to see everything clearly.
